College Packing

It’s finally my last week at my parent’s house! I’m moving back to New York early Friday morning and I couldn’t be more excited! I can’t wait to see my roommates and my friends, to go out to restaurants and to see shows, and just to sit in the park and relax. I’m technically not moving in until Saturday morning so I’ll be spending Friday night at my aunt and uncle’s house. It’ll be nice to spend some time with them and to see my cousins! They have two boys, 3 and 5, who are so adorable.

I’m about 50% done packing now. I have all of my winter stuff packed, as well as toiletries. Basically anything I know I won’t need between now and Friday. I’ve recently bought those vacuum bags where you put a bunch of clothes in and suck the air out. They are so useful! You wouldn’t believe the amount of space you can save with a few of those bags. If you’re moving defiantly check them out. I want to hurry up and finish packing al of my clothes, but I have such a hard time deciding what to wear and I know if I pack a certain shirt or dress I’m going to want to wear it, so I’m trying to hold off on packing my summer clothes.

Recently friends (and some bloggers) have asked for any suggestions for college packing. Here are a few tips that I wish I would have known for my freshman year:

-You don’t have to buy everything before you move!

This applies more to people who are traveling longer distances, like me. Chairs, rugs, lights, etc. can take up a lot of space in your car. Many colleges are located near a target, bed bath and beyond, or ikea, and some even offer a shuttle bus to the store! Wait till you get there, see how big your room is, and then go out and buy bulkier things for your room.

-Bring a medicine basket!

Fill a box or basket with any type of medicine you might need throughout the year. When I got sick at school the last thing I wanted to do was leave my bed. Luckily I already had a lot of what I needed right there.

                        -Tylenol

                        -Midol

                        -Pepto Bismol

                        -Cough Drops

                        -Nyquil

                        -Vitamins

I also use shower soothers when I’m congested or have a cold. They work miracles. I am also a singer, and occasionally use them before a show if I’m feeling a little stuffy. Defiantly check them out!

-A sewing kit might not seem necessary, but I used it multiple times.

-Although I didn’t have it last year, today my mom bought me pepper spray. While I never encountered a situation where I would have needed it, it is smart to have. Especially in NYC. I don’t feel like it’s a necessity, but it’s good to have.

-Bed risers are also a great idea and create a lot more storage space. I kept extra school supplies, extra toiletries, a hamper, and luggage under my bed. It saves a ton of space!

What do you guys do to pack and save space?

  1. those are great tips especially the medicine! Where are you actually from and what college are you attending? I never really thought the vacuum bags worked, but they do seem great for packing.
